Trimble R580 GNSS System:
Complete Capabilities Guide
What Is the Trimble R580?
The Trimble R580 GNSS system is a professional-grade integrated receiver — meaning the GNSS antenna, receiver electronics, radio, and communications are all built into a single weatherproof unit. It is designed for land surveyors, GIS mapping professionals, construction layout crews, and precision agriculture applications requiring reliable centimeter-level accuracy.
The R580 runs Trimble's Maxwell 7 GNSS chipset with ProPoint GNSS technology — the same core engine found in the flagship R12 receiver. Maxwell 7 with ProPoint delivers exceptional performance in challenging GNSS environments including canopy cover, urban canyons, and high multipath situations.
Accuracy: What Can the R580 Achieve?
The R580 is capable of the following positioning accuracies in a properly configured setup:
| Static Horizontal | 3 mm + 0.5 ppm RMS |
| Static Vertical | 5 mm + 0.5 ppm RMS |
| RTK Horizontal | 10 mm + 1 ppm RMS |
| RTK Vertical | 20 mm + 1 ppm RMS |
| Network RTK Horizontal | 10 mm + 0.5 ppm RMS |
| CenterPoint RTX Horizontal | 2 cm RMS |
| CenterPoint RTX Vertical | 3 cm RMS |
| FieldPoint RTX Horizontal | 10 cm RMS |
| Post-Processed Kinematic | 10 mm + 1 ppm RMS |
Trimble CenterPoint RTX: The R580's Biggest Advantage
CenterPoint RTX is Trimble's satellite-delivered correction service. Instead of requiring a local base station or VRS network, RTX corrections are broadcast from geostationary L-band satellites — the same satellites your receiver already tracks. The R580 receives these corrections simultaneously with GNSS signals, requiring no additional hardware, cellular connection, or subscription beyond the receiver itself.
Every R580 comes with 12 months of CenterPoint RTX or FieldPoint RTX activated from the factory. Our rental units maintain active RTX — you benefit from 2 cm horizontal accuracy from day one.
RTX Convergence Time
On startup, the R580 requires a brief convergence period — typically under 1 minute — before RTX reaches its specified accuracy. During convergence, accuracy starts at the sub-meter level and improves rapidly to the 2 cm specification. Trimble xFill maintains accuracy for up to several minutes if satellite signal is briefly interrupted.
Satellite Constellation Tracking
The R580 tracks all major global navigation satellite systems simultaneously:
| GPS | L1C, L1 C/A, L2E (L2P), L2C, L5 |
| GLONASS | L1C/A, L1P, L2C/A, L2P, L3 |
| Galileo | E1, E5A, E5B, E5AltBOC |
| BeiDou | B1, B2, B1C, B2A, B2B |
| QZSS | L1 C/A, L1C, L2C, L5 |
| IRNSS/NavIC | L5 |
| SBAS | WAAS, EGNOS, MSAS, GAGAN, SDCM |
| L-band | Trimble RTX Corrections |
Tracking all constellations maximizes the number of visible satellites at any given moment, which directly improves positioning accuracy, reduces initialization time, and provides redundancy when satellites are obstructed.
Trimble ProPoint GNSS Technology
ProPoint is Trimble's advanced signal processing algorithm built into the Maxwell 7 chipset. It improves positioning performance in environments where conventional receivers struggle — including partial canopy cover, reflective surfaces, and areas with GNSS jamming or spoofing. Key ProPoint features include:
- Trimble EVEREST Plus — advanced multipath signal rejection
- Trimble IonoGuard — ionospheric disturbance mitigation
- Spectrum Analyzer — diagnose GNSS jamming in real time
- Anti-spoofing — protection against false GNSS signals
Communications and Connectivity
Integrated 450 MHz UHF Radio
The R580 includes an optional integrated 450 MHz UHF radio — our rental units are equipped with this radio. Important: the R580's radio is receive-only. It can receive RTK corrections broadcast from a 450 MHz base station, but cannot transmit. This makes the R580 a capable rover in a conventional base/rover RTK setup, but it cannot function as the base.
| Radio Frequency | 450 MHz UHF |
| Channel Spacing | 12.5 and 25 kHz |
| Sensitivity | -103 dBm, GMSK 9600 baud |
| Direction | Receive Only (Rover) |
WiFi and Bluetooth
The R580 includes fully integrated WiFi (simultaneous client and access point modes) and Bluetooth 2.4 GHz. WiFi allows connection to a data collector or configuration via any web browser — access the receiver's built-in web interface at 192.168.142.1 when connected to its WiFi network. Bluetooth enables wireless communication with TSC7, TSC5, and compatible data collectors.
NTRIP / VRS Connectivity
The R580 supports NTRIP v1 and v2 client mode for connecting to VRS networks via cellular or WiFi. This includes state DOT networks (TxDOT RTN, etc.), commercial VRS services, and private correction networks. When connected to a VRS, the R580 achieves full Network RTK accuracy (10 mm + 0.5 ppm horizontal).

Land Surveying — Rover Only Workflows
For surveyors who prefer to work rover-only using RTX or a VRS network, the R580 is an ideal choice. Eliminate base station setup time, reduce equipment to a single receiver on a pole, and achieve the same centimeter accuracy as a traditional base/rover pair.
GIS Mapping and Asset Data Capture
With sub-decimeter accuracy available via RTX and centimeter accuracy via RTK, the R580 handles both everyday GIS mapping and high-precision asset capture. The full constellation tracking and ProPoint technology maintain accuracy even under moderate tree canopy.
Construction Layout
The R580 connects to Trimble Access and supports all standard construction layout workflows. With NTRIP connectivity to a site VRS or a co-worker's base station on 450 MHz, the R580 delivers the RTK precision needed for tight construction tolerances.
Remote and Rural Environments
RTX works anywhere with a view of the sky — no cellular, no infrastructure. For jobs in rural Texas, remote pipeline corridors, or anywhere cell coverage is unreliable, the R580 with RTX delivers consistent 2 cm accuracy without compromise.
