IMU Tilt Compensation.
Survey Without Leveling.

The R980's Trimble Inertial Platform (TIP) technology uses a calibration-free, magnetically immune IMU to compensate for pole tilt up to 40°. Measure corners, edges, and hard-to-reach points without ever leveling the bubble — faster, safer, and more accurate.

🧭

Calibration-Free IMU

No magnetic calibration required. The R980's inertial platform is immune to magnetic interference from rebar, equipment, and metal structures on site.

📐

40° Tilt Range

Tilt up to 40° in any direction while maintaining survey-grade accuracy. The R980 exceeds the R12i's 30° limit — the widest tilt range in Trimble's lineup.

Works With RTX & RTK

Tilt compensation works in both RTX and RTK modes — no correction source required to use TIP. Survey remote areas with satellite corrections and full tilt.

🔒

IMU Integrity Monitor

Continuous bias monitoring for temperature, age, and shock ensures the IMU stays accurate throughout the workday without user intervention.

Dual-Band Radio.
450 + 900 MHz.

Every R980 in our rental fleet is equipped with the fully integrated dual-band 450/900 MHz transceiver — the most versatile radio configuration Trimble offers. Transmit or receive on either band, switching to wherever the signal is cleanest on your job site.

900
MHz Spread Spectrum

Interference Resistant

The 900 MHz spread-spectrum band excels where 450 MHz suffers interference — urban environments, congested job sites, and areas with competing radio traffic. Switch bands without changing hardware.

Frequency Range902–928 MHz
Transmit Power1.0 W
Typical Range3–5 km
ProtocolsTrimble / Pacific Crest / SATEL
Also included: Fully integrated LTE modem with 2G/3G fallback for VRS network connectivity (NTRIP v1/v2), WiFi simultaneous AP+client mode, and Bluetooth 5.1 EDR/BR. The R980 supports every correction delivery method available — radio, cellular, WiFi, and satellite RTX — simultaneously if needed.

R980 Rental FAQ

The R980 is Trimble's newer flagship, released after the R12i with several measurable improvements. The tilt range expands from ±30° to ±40°, and the TIP accuracy improves from RTK+5mm+0.4mm/° to RTK+3mm+0.15mm/° — meaning the R980 is more accurate at greater tilt angles. RTX convergence is faster globally (<3 min vs <15 min outside Fast regions). The radio upgrades from 450 MHz-only to dual-band 450+900 MHz, and the cellular modem is full LTE vs 3.5G HSDPA. The R980 also has 9GB vs 6GB internal storage and runs Trimble Access 2024.
Yes. The R980's TIP IMU tilt compensation works in all positioning modes — RTK, Network RTK, and CenterPoint RTX. You can survey tilted with satellite-only RTX corrections and get the same tilt compensation as you would with a base station. This is ideal for remote areas where you want the efficiency of tilt surveying without needing any infrastructure.
The 900 MHz spread-spectrum band is most useful when 450 MHz is congested or experiencing interference — common in urban environments, near industrial facilities, or on large job sites with multiple crews using radios. Spread spectrum is also license-free in the US, which simplifies operations. For most rural and open-sky survey work, 450 MHz is the standard and preferred band. Having both available means you're covered regardless of conditions.
The R980 requires Trimble Access 2024.00 or later and is compatible with the Trimble TSC7, TSC5, TDC6, T100, T7, and Android/iOS devices running supported apps. If you need a data collector as part of your rental, contact us — we can quote a package that includes a TSC7 or TSC5 with the R980.
Yes. Unlike the R580, the R980 can function as both a base and a rover. Its dual-band 450/900 MHz radio can transmit corrections to other rovers. If you need a base/rover pair, we can configure a multi-unit rental with one unit as base and additional units as rovers. Contact us to discuss your workflow.
The standard kit includes the R980 receiver, batteries, charger, quick-connect, carbon fiber pole, and case. A data collector and Trimble Access license are not included by default but can be added to your rental quote. The R980 can also be configured and monitored via its built-in WiFi web interface without any controller.
