Overview

Why Update Firmware?

Keeping firmware current is one of the most important maintenance tasks for a Trimble GNSS receiver. Firmware updates deliver:

What updates deliver Why it matters
New constellation support Access to newer BeiDou, Galileo, and QZSS signals for faster initialization and better coverage
RTK performance improvements Faster fix times, better float-to-fixed transition, improved performance under canopy
Bug fixes Resolves known Bluetooth pairing issues, SiteWorks connection errors, and stability problems
Security patches Wi-Fi and network security improvements — especially important for receivers connected to job site networks
New feature unlocks Some firmware versions enable new capabilities without requiring additional hardware
△ Before you updateAlways note the current firmware version before updating — if the new firmware causes any issues you will need this to roll back. Check the current version in the receiver WebUI → Firmware, or in WinFlash after connecting.
Step 1

Download Firmware via Trimble Installation Manager

Trimble Installation Manager is the official free tool for downloading firmware files for supported receivers. Always use this to get the latest firmware before updating.

1

Download and install Trimble Installation Manager

  • Go to: trimble.com/installationmanager
  • Download and install the free utility on your Windows PC.
  • Trimble Installation Manager supports R750, R780, SPS986, R12i, and many other current receivers.
2

Connect the receiver to your PC

  • Connect via Ethernet using the Trimble LEMO data cable (P/N 54693-00) — this is the most reliable connection method.
  • Alternatively, connect via USB if your receiver and PC both support it.
  • Launch Trimble Installation Manager and click Connect.
  • The software will detect the receiver and display its current firmware version and serial number.
3

Download the firmware file

  • Trimble Installation Manager shows available firmware versions for your specific receiver.
  • Select the version you want to install from the dropdown menu in the top right corner.
  • Click Install to begin — Installation Manager will download and install the firmware automatically.
  • Alternatively, you can download the firmware file to your PC first and use WinFlash or the WebUI to install it manually (see methods below).
💡 For older or discontinued receiversReceivers not supported by Trimble Installation Manager can have firmware downloaded from the Trimble Geospatial discontinued products support page. The firmware will be a .timg file that you load manually via WinFlash using the Insert key trick described below.
Method A

Update Firmware via WebUI (Easiest)

The WebUI method requires no additional software — just a browser and a network connection to the receiver. This is the recommended method for most users.

1

Connect to the receiver WebUI

  • Connect via Wi-Fi hotspot or Ethernet direct cable. See our R750 WebUI guide or R780 WebUI guide for connection steps.
  • Log in with: Username: admin | Password: password
2

Navigate to the Firmware page

  • In the WebUI, click Firmware in the top navigation menu.
  • The page shows the currently installed firmware version and build date.
  • Click Install New Firmware or Choose File.
3

Select and install the firmware file

  • Click Choose File and browse to the firmware file you downloaded via Trimble Installation Manager.
  • The file will typically be named something like Firmware_XXXXXX-for-Web-UI.timg.
  • Click Install New Firmware to begin the upload and installation.
  • Do NOT close the browser or disconnect the receiver during this process — it takes 3–8 minutes.
  • The receiver will automatically restart when the update is complete.
△ Do not interrupt the updateCutting power or closing the browser mid-update can corrupt the firmware. Keep the receiver powered and connected until it automatically restarts.
Method B

Update Firmware via WinFlash

WinFlash is Trimble's desktop firmware utility for Windows. It connects to the receiver over Ethernet (recommended) or serial port and gives you full control over the firmware installation process.

1

Install WinFlash

  • Download WinFlash from the Trimble website — search for "Trimble WinFlash utility download".
  • Run the installer and follow the on-screen instructions. WinFlash installs to Program Files and adds a Start menu shortcut.
  • WinFlash runs on Windows 7, 8, 10, and 11. It is a 32-bit application.
2

Connect the receiver via Ethernet

  • Connect the receiver to your PC using the Trimble LEMO-to-Ethernet cable (P/N 54693-00).
  • Set your PC to a static IP: 192.168.1.100 | Subnet: 255.255.255.0
  • This Ethernet method is strongly recommended over serial — faster and more stable for firmware flashing.
  • Power on the receiver and allow it to fully boot (60–90 seconds) before launching WinFlash.
3

Launch WinFlash and select your device

  • Click the WinFlash icon in the Start menu to launch it.
  • On the Device Configuration screen, click the Device type dropdown and select your receiver model (e.g. R750, R780, SPS985/986).
  • In the PC serial port / connection field, select the Ethernet/IP connection option and enter the receiver IP: 192.168.1.20
  • Click Next.
4

Select the operation — Load GPS Software

  • The Operation Selection screen appears showing all supported operations for your receiver.
  • Select Load GPS Software from the list.
  • Click Next to proceed to the firmware selection screen.
5

Select the firmware and load

  • WinFlash shows a list of firmware versions it knows about. Select the version you want to install.
  • If your firmware file is not in the list — use the Insert key trick described in the next section to browse to it manually.
  • Click Next and WinFlash will load the firmware onto the receiver.
  • This process takes 3–10 minutes. Do not disconnect the receiver or close WinFlash during this time.
  • When complete, click Exit. The receiver will restart automatically.
Pro Tip

The Insert Key Trick — Loading a Local Firmware File

💡 Most technicians don't know thisWinFlash only shows firmware files it already knows about by default. If you downloaded a newer firmware file from Trimble Installation Manager, or if you're loading a .timg file manually, it won't appear in the list — unless you use the Insert key.
1

Get to the Load GPS Software screen

  • Follow Steps 1–4 in the WinFlash method above — connect to the receiver, select your device type, and select Load GPS Software.
  • Click Next to arrive at the firmware file selection screen.
2

Press the Insert key to open the file browser

  • On the firmware selection screen, press the Insert key on your keyboard.
  • A standard Windows file browser dialog will open.
  • Navigate to the folder where your downloaded firmware file is located.
  • Select the firmware file (typically a .timg or .zip file) and click Open.
  • The firmware file now appears in the WinFlash selection list and can be selected for installation.
3

Select it and proceed

  • With the file now listed, select it and click Next.
  • WinFlash will load your locally sourced firmware file onto the receiver.
  • This is the correct way to install firmware you downloaded separately — it works on all current Trimble receivers.
💡 Where to download firmware filesDownload firmware files directly from Trimble Installation Manager (trimble.com/installationmanager) — it is the most reliable and up-to-date source. Connect your receiver to Installation Manager, browse the available versions, and download the .timg file to a local folder before loading it into WinFlash using the Insert key method above.
Troubleshooting

Common WinFlash Errors & Fixes

Error / Problem Likely cause Fix
WinFlash can't find the receiver Wrong IP address or PC not on same subnet Confirm PC static IP is 192.168.1.100 and receiver IP is 192.168.1.20. Disable Wi-Fi on PC. Ping the receiver IP first.
Firmware file not in the list WinFlash doesn't know about locally downloaded files Use the Insert key trick on the firmware selection screen to browse to your downloaded file.
Load fails partway through Connection dropped mid-flash or firewall interruption Temporarily disable Windows Firewall and antivirus. Re-attempt the update. Ensure Ethernet connection is stable — do not use Wi-Fi for firmware flashing.
Receiver unresponsive after update Update completed but receiver needs full power cycle Hold the power button for 10+ seconds to force power off. Wait 30 seconds. Power back on normally.
WinFlash shows wrong firmware version after update WinFlash cache / display not refreshed Disconnect and reconnect to the receiver in WinFlash. Check the version in the receiver WebUI → Firmware for the authoritative version number.
"Device not supported" error Wrong device type selected in WinFlash, or receiver needs a different WinFlash version Verify the exact receiver model and select the correct device type. Download the latest WinFlash version from Trimble — older WinFlash versions don't know about newer receivers.
